IN THESE stormy economic times, the Peralta Community College District is tossing a vital lifeline to local students. The four Peralta Colleges -- College of Alameda, Berkeley City College, Merritt and Laney Colleges in Oakland -- teach 30,000 students each semester, and are finding new and innovative ways to help local students transform their lives through education.

Demand for public higher education has never been higher. Budgets are tight and, increasingly, the cost of private college is not an option.

Bond Ratings Maintained, Peralta Community College District Bonds No Longer On Watch List

With its bond rating maintained, Peralta Community College District bonds have been removed from the watch list of a leading crediting-rating agency. Standard & Poor's affirmed its 'AA-' rating on the district's General Obligation (GO) bonds and 'A+' rating on the district's pension obligation bonds in July. Both of these are considered strong ratings by the company.

Peralta Colleges Will Observe César Chávez Day Beginning with Upcoming Academic Year

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Peralta Community College District Board
of Trustees announced Tuesday, July 20, during their first meeting of the new
fiscal year that, going forward, the District’s academic calendar will observe
César Chávez Day as a holiday for all four of the colleges.

This year, the United States of America will celebrate its 234th birthday with fireworks, parades, BBQ’s and relaxation. I think about how this country with its rich ethnic and racial diversity has endured despite America’s troublesome history over such outrages as slavery, interment camps and the expression of xenophobic tendencies during tough economic times.

As the White House staged a first-of-its-kind community college summit Tuesday, the Obama administration is proposing that stronger partnerships between two-year public colleges and big-name U.S. employers such as McDonald's and The Gap would help better match workers with jobs during the economic recovery and beyond.

Community college officials -- including some from the East Bay -- welcomed the new initiative, called "Skills for America's Future."
